None of the Ukraine war makes sense without the bigger picture. One possible bigger picture is a proxy war between the US and China, where Ukraine is the US's proxy and Russia is China's proxy. The current stalemate would mean the US and China are in (temporary) balance.
Another possible bigger picture is that the war is the new news item to replace Covid. Perhaps Russia got a piece of land in return for supplying the distraction. The war is also used to impose sanctions, which increase energy and food costs in much of the world.
Or you can say the war is a result of Russia's desire to defend the ethnic Russians which were under siege in Eastern Ukraine. If so, they will stop advancing where few of the citizens welcome the Russian army.
